The world’s only dedicated
subsea insurance specialist.
Built by Operators
We are the only insurance brokerage in the subsea sector founded on the principle that to insure a mission, you must first understand the mission.
We don’t just assess risk on a spreadsheet; we have managed it on the aft deck, in the control room, and at 300 meters depth.
The “Operator-Broker” Advantage.
Most insurance brokers speak the language of premiums and deductibles. We speak the language of hydrostatic pressure, payload integration, and weather windows.
At Subsea Risk, we translate your complex engineering challenges into clear, insurable narratives that underwriters understand and trust.
By focusing on a select portfolio of high-value subsea assets and complex expeditions, we ensure that every policy is bespoke, robust, and mission-ready.

“I’ve sat in the project meetings where the technology was too new, or the location too remote, for standard insurers to touch. I built Subsea Risk to the be partner that says:
‘We understand the engineering,
now let’s structure the risk.'”
Tom Hutton is widely recognised for his operational background in the high-stakes world of deep-ocean exploration and luxury adventure. His career is defined by managing “impossible” logistics in remote environments.
Before founding Subsea Risk, Tom served as Director of Research Platforms at DEEP, where he was instrumental in the operational planning for the next generation of subsea habitats and human presence underwater. Prior to that, he was Director of Operations at COOKSON ADVENTURES, executing complex, world-first expeditions that paired ultra-high-net-worth clients with scientific research vessels and submersibles.
A former Commissioned Officer in the British Army, Tom brings military-grade rigour to risk assessment. He has facilitated operations ranging from documenting new killer whale species in the Antarctic to managing the logistics of classed expeditionary yachts.
Tom founded Subsea Risk with a singular goal: to build the brokerage he wished he had when he was the one signing the manifest.

“As private maritime exploration pushes deeper, the liabilities become exponentially more complex. We engineer specialised safety nets for those navigating the uncharted waters of subsea operation.”
Tom Montgomery brings over two decades of specialised expertise in brokering highly complex, multi-jurisdictional marine risks. Tom leverages his understanding of cross-border liability to create bespoke insurance solutions.
At Subsea Risk, Tom’s deep ties to the ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) market, family offices, and private banks are invaluable. His extensive history brokering the world’s most sophisticated superyachts perfectly positions him to navigate the complex risk and liability profiles of private manned submersibles, deep-water exploration vessels, and the AUV/ROV systems frequently deployed from these mother ships.
A recognised authority on specialised marine asset ownership, Tom is a published author and frequent speaker at maritime industry forums. He currently serves as Rear Commodore of the Royal Thames Yacht Club. Tom’s unparalleled network and mastery of bespoke marine risk make him a vital asset to clients pushing the boundaries of private subsea exploration and technology.
